Some words from Carolyn Wilki

Carolyn Wilki will be here with her Sheep & Border Collies to narrate and explain the event. Known throughout the Northeast for her dog training and involvement with herding events, seminars and field trials, Carolyn brings her special ability to the Roaring Rock.

This herding demo will take place in the fields behind the restaurant and will last about 30-40 minutes at which time you may ask questions and take photos .. then everyone comes inside to enjoy the wine event which will feature “Yellow Tail of Australia”

Carol has selected the wines and paired each with a dish that highlights each particular wine while incorporating South Eastern Australian cuisine.

Yellow Tail is the new face of the ‘Aussie’ wine industry and is taking the World by storm or at least the U.S. which is closing in quickly on Britain as the largest market for Australian wines ! The phenomenal success can be attributed to: meticulously planned and executed marketing strategies, packaging, pricing, product, place & promotion.

The U.S. market is $20 billion and of the $2 billion import segment, the annual Australian share is $585 million and Yellow Tail has become and is now the number 1 Australian imported wine in the USA.. By all accounts, Yellow Tail has taken the U.S. marketers by surprise but actually the credit belongs to the winery’s management that introduced the brand at the right time with their marketing support program in place.

The Yellow Tail Winery, in the South East Victoria ‘Riverland Region’, has begun it’s climb into the Global Wine Arena. Irrigated by the Murray River, (one of Australia’s 3 main rivers) this area is considered to be the “Fruit Bowl” of the continent and Australia’s most beautiful Kangaroo is the “Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby” (Yellow Tail) because of it’s distinct yellow markings .. an endangered species now being preserved !

Carolyn Wilki – Raspberry Ridge Sheep Farm, Bangor, PA
The Sheep Herding Demo will start PROMPTLY at Noon.

“My dogs have won numerous blue ribbons at herding competitions. We (the dogs, sheep and I) perform herding demonstrations at Scottish/Irish Festivals, country fairs and similar events in the Northeast and have been featured in local newspapers and on TV several times. In addition, I have trained dogs and their owners to well over 200 AKC herding titles. People come to visit me from all over the United States to learn about herding and dog behavior.

At least twice a year, national AKC herding competitions are held here at the farm, usually in mid-July and mid-November. At various dates in the year, we hold all-breed “Herding Instinct Tests” to assess the herding behaviors lying dormant in “Duke” and “Fluffy” who, as pet dogs, probably have never seen a sheep before in their lives.

On many weekends, we offer clinics in sheep herding or dog behavior and training. When we train dogs here at Raspberry Ridge, regardless of what we are teaching, we use ‘positive reinforcement behavioral techniques’ because they work most quickly, most humanely and most effectively on the dog. By contrast, it is usually much harder to train the person than the dog!”
