Spain
is located on the Iberian Peninsula in Western Europe with it’s Southern
Coast touching the Mediterranean Sea and it’s Western boarder on Portugal
and the Atlantic Ocean.
Spain has over 2.9 million planted acres – making it the most widely planted
wine producing nation but it is only the third largest producer of wine
World wide !
Very low yields and very wide spacing of the old vines contribute to this
but it has an abundance of “native grape varieties” with over 600 different
ones planted throughout Spain.
In 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered the New World under the sponsorship
of the Spanish Crown which opened up a new export market as well as new
opportunity for wine production.
