Affectionately known as the ‘Cape’ .. the first
wine in the New World
was produced on the Cape in 1659. The Dutch settlers called
it Verbouwde Land .. a Dutch term that translates as
“cultivated land”
South Africa’s wines are
grown in lime-rich red ‘Karoo’ soils which have their origins in decomposed
sedimentary rocks from the Pre-Cambrian era.
