La Terre translated
directly from the French is: The Earth, Soil or Ground and is used in the
concept of “Terroir” which has developed through centuries of French
Winemaking based on observations of what made wines from different regions,
vineyards or even different sections of the same vineyard so different from
each other !
A
“terroir” is a
group of vineyards (or even vines) from the same region, belonging to a
specific appellation and sharing the same type of soil, weather conditions,
grapes and wine making know-how which all contribute to give it’s specific
personality to the wine.
Long before the
French, the winemaking regions of the ancient world already developed the
concept of different regions having the potential to create very different
and distinct wines, even from the same grapes !
Although
this winery has ‘been around’ for more than a few years .. Finding facts
about the operation has been very difficult. Only when going to California
Wine
Country do you hear that this was one of Robert Mondavi’s European style
ventures. He loved this style of producing wines., small and very
controllable !
Woodbridge on the label and grapes from Lodi that approximate
the “terroir” of areas of France.
His influence was far reaching to say the least.
We’re going to
change things around just a bit : A White & a Red from the La Terre Winery
and a White & a Red from another recognized Mondavi Winery in the same
area.. We will finish with a Port from Australia which welcomed Robert
Mondavi’s input .. To be associated with the Mondavi name was to make your
product Global !
Note :
Although our wine distributor treats Liquor Stores & Restaurants differently,
they have allowed us to ‘buy-in’ so many cases to reduce prices for our
‘off-premise’ customers due to our frequent wine tastings!
