At the beginning of the 20th. Century,
there were any
number ofsmall
German breweries in Newark, NJ on the banks of the Passaic River because the
river water was so pure and clear !With the advent of WW I in
1916 – 17 all those small brewers fled to the Mid-West and established
themselves there and are responsible
for some of the great beers from that area. The
‘Big Boys’ (Bud, Miller, Ballantine, Reingold, etc.) bought allthe
East Coast small breweries but never continued making thesewonderful
beers .. after all they were ‘competition’ !In those days Newark
was worth 10 – 12 million $ in beer salesand was considered the
brew capital of the East. Today,
there are so many ‘craft breweries’ that great beer is
available from all over U.S. and the brewer’s attitude is ..“Why
should I sell my brewery to you?” I can do that at any timebut
all I need from you National Brands is ‘distribution’ andsince
“Half a Loaf is better than None” – National Distributionfor
Micro – Brewers was started !
