“Williamsburg Winery”
Williamsburg, Virginia
We have just returned from a visit to Colonial
Williamsburg, probably the best historical restoration in the United States !
While there we decided to go and see the
Williamsburg Winery, outside of the restored area but done in the colonial
style.
When we stopped by, 6 or 7 years ago it was really
“barebones”..... 300 plus acres, a small portion of which was planted with
grape vines, a single building about 15 feet square that served as a reception
house with a few cases of wines that were available and not much else!
“Surprise – Surprise” this visit ……..
The entrance to the winery is pretty much the same
but you ‘wind’ your way past row upon row of straight plantings on both sides
of this narrow dirt road – each section having a wooden sign as to what grapes
and wines for what purpose are being grown – looks as though the entire acreage
contains vines.
“The Reception Area” … a series of buildings
with a store for buying wine and registering for a tour of the facility and
tasting.
When you go down to the wine cellar .. calculate, if
you can, the number of French Oak Casks containing aged wine at $600.00 each !
Upstairs a 15th Century French Country
Hall has been added with lighting replicas from the era and 2 fireplaces from a
French Chateau that were brought here and re-assembled opposite each other …
this room with low ceilings, is about 75 feet long by 40 feet wide with armor
replicas on the long sides.
We are trying to work with the winery to have a Williamsburg Wine event here .. even though
there is no distribution to NJ.
The awards from the Wine Spectator alone are enough to peak
your interest !
