Affectionately known as the “Cape” ..the first wine in the New World was

 made on the cape in 1659. The Dutch settlers called it Verbouwde Land      

  .. a Dutch term that translates as “cultivated land.” South Africa’s     

 wines are grown in lime-rich red “Karoo” soils which have their origins

 in decomposed sedimentary rocks of the Nama system from the

 Pre-Cambrian era.
