Five young sheep getting ready for their performance

The stars of the show - Carolyn and Dave

The supporting cast

Caught between the people and that DOG!

Carolyn with her sheep crook. This picture is courtesy of Susan Mayrant; a guest at the wonderful wine tasting.

A sheep dog is well trained to cut-out one sheep.

Dave watches while Carolyn explains how this sheep might be sheared or .....

get medical treatment, shots or a quick health exam.

Dave waits while the younger dogs get ready for their chance.

The handler stays with the flock as the young dog works. This dog is eighteen months old.

Training is a long proposition and always needs reinforcement.

Carolyn did a great job of explaing the training and the herding process.

Never ate lamb in my life - nice sheep.

The show's almost over.

Happy faces. The two gentlemen at this table were celebrating birthdays.

A wine tasting is a great place to meet new friends from almost anywhere.

You can't help notice that the sound level is directly proportional to the wine consumed.

Raspberry Ridge Sheep Farm features Best Buddy Puppy Kindergarten, Pet Obedience, and Beginner Agility Group Classes during the year. Emphasizing positive reinforcement training, group classes are small (no more than 6 dogs per class) and are held weekly in the evenings and on Saturday mornings in a semi-heated, fan cooled barn. Call/e-mail for schedule/more information.

Raspberry Ridge Sheep Farm also features private lessons in obedience and herding for adult dogs and puppies, all breeds, and behavioral counseling for difficult dogs.

We also offer herding trials, training seminars and clinics, herding camps, and herding instinct tests for dogs and their well behaved owners—check the website for dates and information. The next all-breed herding instinct test is scheduled for Saturday October 1.

AUSTRALIAN HERDING FACTOIDS

  • Australia is both the world's smallest continent and its largest island.

  • There are 9 sheep for every 1 person in Australia. The U.S . has 1 sheep for every 35 people.

  •  The movie "Babe," which featured a pig herding sheep, was filmed in Australia.

BORDER COLLIE FACTOIDS

  • The modern Border Collie breed originated in the border regions between Scotland and England (hence the name "Border Collie").

  • The word "collie" comes from the informal Gaelic farm term "colley" for "useful" or "coley" for black.

  • The unique Border Collie "eye" is a commanding gaze which the breed uses to compel the sheep to follow the flock, guided by the dogs. Not all breeds of herding dogs use "eye" to move sheep.

TUNIS SHEEP FACTOIDS

Now considered a rare breed in the U. S., Tunis sheep originate from the deserts of No. Africa. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were among the first Americans to import Tunis. Tunis lambs are born a dark reddish brown color, and their fleece becomes white as they mature. Only one ram (male sheep) is necessary for a flock of 175 ewes (female sheep).
